DMX or SPI? How to Choose the Right Addressable LED Tape

Selecting an addressable LED tape for a project involves several factors that determine functionality, appearance and long-term performance. The two most common control protocols are SPI and DMX512.
Voltage
Common voltages are DC5V, DC12V and DC24V. DC5V is normally limited to about 5 meters per feed point, DC12V works well up to 10 meters, and DC24V is the standard choice for runs of 15 to 20 meters.
Pixel Density
Typical densities are 10, 20, 30, 60 and 144 pixels per meter. Facade outline lighting usually needs 10 to 30 pixels per meter, while close viewing installations benefit from 60 pixels per meter or more.
Signal Protocol
SPI covers WS2811, WS2815, SK6812 and APA102 families with low cost and a large effect library. DMX512 uses a balanced differential signal, stays stable over long distances and connects directly to professional consoles.
Summary
For decorative, signage and short run applications SPI is the cost-effective choice. For engineering projects with long cable runs and console control, DMX512 is the safer specification.
